Joseph Conrad
1857–1924
Joseph Conrad was a Polish-born British novelist and short-story writer. Born Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski, he spent much of his early adulthood at sea before settling in England. Writing in his adopted language, he explored loyalty, isolation, imperialism and moral responsibility. His experience of maritime life and travel gave his fiction its international settings and its enduring concern with people under pressure.
