Nadine Gordimer
1923–2014
South African novelist whose work examined the moral and political consequences of apartheid. Born in Springs, Transvaal, to Jewish immigrant parents, she was largely educated at home and spent a year at the University of the Witwatersrand. Several of her books were banned in South Africa, and she joined the African National Congress while it was outlawed. The Conservationist shared the 1974 Booker Prize, and in 1991 she received the Nobel Prize in Literature. She died in Johannesburg in July 2014. Get a Life, about an ecologist undergoing radiation treatment, was longlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize.
