Malcolm Bradbury
1932–2000
English novelist, critic and academic whose comic fiction satirises university life, intellectual fashion and Cold War politics. Born in Sheffield, he wrote his first novel, Eating People Is Wrong, while recovering from heart surgery. At the University of East Anglia he became Professor of American Studies and founded the MA in Creative Writing. Other novels include Stepping Westward and The History Man. He was knighted in 2000 and died in Norwich in November that year. Rates of Exchange, set in the imaginary Eastern European state of Slaka, was shortlisted for the 1983 Booker Prize.
